I posted something on LinkedIn this week that got some reactions: "If you can't see the limits of AI, you aren't good enough at what you’re doing."
I stand by it.
Here's what I mean: If you're an expert in your field, you should be able to see AI’s gaps. You should be able to spot where the output is mediocre, where the reasoning breaks down, what factors it missed, and where it misses the nuance that separates good work from great work. And if you can't? That's a signal you need to get better at your craft before you can unlock the most value from AI.
The play is this: Use AI to amplify the parts of your work that don't require your highest-level thinking. Delegate the scaffolding, the first drafts, the repetitive stuff. Keep the strategic, creative, or deeply technical pieces for yourself.
Be honest about what you're actually good at. Where should you outsource to real humans? Where do you need to skill up before you can even evaluate AI's output? And where does having something rather than nothing make more of a difference? Not everything needs expert-level work. And, sometimes you just need a little bit more understanding (not full expert level) of how something actually works to get better results from AI.
Here's the critical part: Be conscious of the limitations. When you aren't an expert— and when expertise really matters— double-check everything. Find people who actually know what they're doing and compare AI's output to their work. Look for the gaps. Get specific about where it falls short. That's how you build judgment over time.
I do this constantly when I'm learning something new. I'm not an expert in everything—nobody is. So I find experts, compare outputs, and learn to recognize what good actually looks like.
Bottom line: AI is a tool for amplification. You can't amplify what you don't understand in the first place.
